Marieta Chirulescu’s artistic practice is informed by the tension between materiality, process and illusion. Chirulescu’s preoccupation with the relationship of painting to disciplines of mechanical and digital reproduction techniques, through her use of photography, photocopy, digital scanning and printing, she abstracts realistic imagery to create an optical illusion. Her painterly aesthetic uses canvas as the substrate, whereupon her visual language occupies, disrupts and challenges the discipline of painting, blurring the distinctions between the varied artistic methods she embraces.  Chirulescu’s appropriation of reality, her re-ordering of visual information as way of entering them and enriching them with varied intuitive meanings, invites reflection on the process, nature and function of painting.
