Born in Sombor, Serbia in 1937 and died in Zagreb, Croatia in 2010.
Gotovac is considered the precursor of performance art in Croatia and the former Yugoslavia, and an important figure in the development of the artistic avant-garde in Europe during the 1960s and 1970s. He began his career with works in photographic medium and then he moved on to produce collages, films, performances and actions. The artist made a number of avant-garde structuralist films that positioned him as one of the most important experimental filmmakers in the European historical context. Gotovac’s artistic expression was based on a creative and existential persistence in identifying art and life and with this approach he clearly demonstrated that subversion and inclination to experimentation in the formal visual language leads to finding solutions for complex and multi-layered artistic visions.
